A Big Impact Rare Yellow Diamond

The Eureka Yellow Diamond

The Eureka was the first ever yellow diamond to be discovered in South Africa in 1867. It weighed 21.25 carats (that's 4.250g) in the rough.

It was bought by Debeers and cut into a 10.73ct Cushion shaped brilliant cut diamond, then donated back to the people of South Africa.

This present day it sits in the Kimberly mine where it can be seen on display.

What Makes Yellow Diamonds Rare?

The natural yellow diamond is very rare compared with the white diamond and gets it's colour from the presence of nitrogen during the formation of the stone.

Did you know: only 1 in 10,000 natural diamonds are fancy-coloured (yellow, pink, blue, orange, green, brown and red - the most rare). While yellow diamonds are one of the most common of this list they are still incredibly far and few between compared to white diamonds.

The shade of yellow diamond depends on the amount of nitrogen atoms within their crystal structure. As with the white diamonds, yellow diamonds are also graded on a scale, with the deeper the intensity of colour the more expensive the stone.

Fancy Light Yellow is the palest shade making it the most affordable, going onto Fancy Yellow, Intense Yellow, Deep Yellow and Vivid Yellow which is the most expensive per carat.
